Three Christiana Care Health System nurses have been awarded one-year fellowships by the American Organization of Nurse Executives, a professional development program designed to provide an in-depth environment of learning. Patricia Blair, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, CEN, Dennis Harris, MSN, RN-BC and Amy Kohl, MSN, RN, CCRN were selected to participate in this unique fellowship program that supports the Institute of Medicine Future of Nursing recommendation to prepare and enable nurses to lead change to advance health.
Cynthia Griffin, MS, BSN, RN, CPHQ, CCM, has been named Christiana Care’s new chief nursing officer, community care.
Christiana Care is taking another step forward in enhancing patient safety with "smart" infusion pumps, designed to eliminate manual entry and the potential for human error in administering the majority of IV medications and fluids. These smart pumps offer immediate access to patient information by associating the patient, the device and medication orders. This information is then sent to the electronic medical record for viewing and interpretation.

The Christiana Care Critical Care Nurse Residency program has been granted formal accreditation with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The 24-week program integrates educational components with preceptor-led clinical experiences to ease the transition to critical care nursing. It convenes in March and July.

Catherine Shull Fernald, DNP, RN, RNC-OB, NEA-BC, joined Christiana Care in December as chief nursing officer, Acute Care. Fernald has more than 27 years of experience in managing clinical operations, nursing, ancillary and support services across the continuum of care.
Megan Smakulski, MSN, MBA, RN, PCCN, has been named the new Nurse Manager for 6 South, WICU and Stepdown. Smakulski was promoted from her position as assistant nurse manager on the Transitional Medical Unit (TMU) at Christiana Hospital. She started at Christiana Care in 2012 on the TMU.
As a leader, Deborah Ayres-Harding, MSN, RN-BC, makes certain every nurse on her team has the resources to succeed. She supports nurses in furthering their education to advance their careers. And if her unit is short-staffed, she assumes the role of second nurse, encouraging a shift nurse to supervise.
